Hello,
I’m excited to bring you this month’s Vblog, where we delve into one of the most crucial aspects of retriever training – casting mechanics.
It was a serendipitous moment when I stumbled upon Delma Hazzard’s notes from her time with the legendary Rex Carr. Those notes contained a gem of wisdom that completely transformed my approach to handling a dog on a blind: the concept of “Momentum.”
Understanding your dog’s momentum is more important than their exact position in relation to the blind. Most of us, myself included, tend to handle our dogs as if they are moving on a sheet of graph paper. But here’s the revelation – you can have three different dogs in the exact same spot, and each might need a different cast. It all hinges on how they arrived at that location and their intent. This is the essence of “Momentum.”
Momentum isn’t just about the dog’s speed and direction; it’s about their intent and the strength of that intent. When I began to see handling through this lens, I became a more intuitive and effective handler.
In the video above, I break down the key elements of running a blind. We’ll focus on casting, and I’ll share techniques to refine and elevate both your and your dog’s casting skills. I’ve also included several drills with their specific purposes. Trust me, taking a few minutes to watch this video will provide you with invaluable insights.
Enjoy,
Pat
