What separates the GREAT handlers...

I’ve been reflecting on what sets great handlers apart from the rest. The first thing that comes to mind is their exceptional ability to read dog behavior. Every action a dog takes is purposeful. The subtle clues they give can provide the insights needed to make informed decisions as a trainer and handler. Reading a dog at your side can be challenging enough, but when that dog is 200 yards away in the field, your dog-reading skills are truly put to the test.

The ability to see and interpret these behavioral changes is critical. Understanding the early warning signs gives you a significant advantage over other handlers. By identifying the erosion of behavior in its early stages, you can make the necessary adjustments to right the ship before it veers too far off course.

In the video I’ve included, I’ll narrate and highlight key indicators that help me understand a dog’s mindset. This footage, taken from behind the handler at the 2023 Super Retriever Series Crown Championship, offers an exceptional viewpoint thanks to the incredible camera work. It’s like being on the line as the handler yourself.

This video is an example of the type of training lessons we cover in The Retriever Revolution Membership. It’s this kind of curriculum that can accelerate your learning curve as a handler. Gaining this level of experience would typically take years of trial and error. I wish I had access to resources like this when I was struggling to learn in my early career.

I hope you enjoy the video, and I’d love to hear your feedback.

Guns Up,

Pat
